Miguel Angel Garcia, better known as Mikey Garcia (34-0-0)(28KOs), is a boxer that is slowly but surely rising to the top. At only 26 years old, Mikey Garcia has had an amazing boxing career. Former Ring Magazine and WBO Featherweight champion of the world and current WBO Super Featherweight Champion of the world, he has taken down all of his opponents and has continued with his perfect record.
Garcia comes from a rich boxing heritage. Son of Eduardo Garcia and most importantly, brother of Robert Garcia, former IBF Super Featherweight Champion. Both Eduardo Garcia and Robert Garcia are Mikey’s trainers although we have seen an absence of Mikey’s Father in the his corner in more recent fights.
Mikey had to go up in weight after he lost his title on the scale during his first time defending his WBO title against Juan Manuel Lopez. Garcia failed to make the 126 pound limit and lost his title. He had to pay a $150,000 fine to Juan Manuel Lopez. Although Mikey lost his title, he made sure he wouldn’t lose the fight and won with a knockout in the fourth round.
Mikey then went up in weight to the 130 pound weight division. He has fought only two fights in this division but has won both of his fights. His first fight with the Puerto Rican fighter, Rocky Martinez, seemed to start off bumpy. Martinez sent Mikey to the canvas in the second round, Mikey quickly recovered though and controlled the rest of the fight. In the eighth round Garcia gave Martinez a mean left hook to the body knocking out Martinez and taking the victory. His second fight was recent, against Juan Carlos Burgos. Garcia fought smart and kept on landing major punches on Burgos. He won by unanimous decision. After the fight had ended former WBA and IBF champion , Yuriokis “Cyclon” Gamboa approached him and they talked about a chance for a possible fight. The fight is set to be under way and the fans couldn’t be happier, they have been asking for this fight to take place for a while now.
Mikey Garcia is the type of fighter that more people should pay attention to. He has recently been added to the p4p list and has a perfect record to demonstrate why. As a featherweight he was on top of his division and I’m pretty sure that he will do the same in the Super Featherweight division. He is a smart fighter but can also be a slugger. He has been getting more and more attention and was even rumored to be one of Manny Pacquiao’s future opponents. He is an excellent fighter in excellent shape and he will no doubt continue to have a great career.
